Leaders and Legends: Helen Adams Keller

Posted: 05 Nov 2009 12:20 PM PST

Helen Adams Keller
Inducted 2002
Hall of Fame for Leaders and Legends of the Blindness Field

Helen Keller was born in Alabama in 1880. At the age of 18 months she experienced a fever that left her deaf, blind and unable to speak. An extremely intelligent and sensitive child, by the age of seven she had invented over 60 different signs by which she could talk to her family. Because of this restricted communication her frustration and anger grew and were not relieved until Annie Sullivan, a 20 year old graduate of the Perkins School for the Blind, came to be her teacher. With her help Helen learned the manual alphabet, braille, the Tadoma method of reading lips and later learned to speak. With Annie as her interpreter, in 1888 she attended Perkins Institute for the Blind and in 1894 the Wright-Humason School for the Deaf in New York. She received a B.A. cum laude in 1904 from Radcliffe College. She thus became the first deaf-blind person to graduate from college. In 1936 she moved to Connecticut where she lived until her death in 1968 at the age of 87.

1956, Helen Keller presents the prestigious Albert Lasker Medical Research Award to Drs. Arnall Patz (right) and Everett Kinsey. Kinsey is the biochemist who organized a larger study that confirmed Patz's RLF oxygen findings.

While at Radcliffe, Helen Keller began a writing career which was to continue for 50 years. In addition to The Story of My Life, she wrote 11 other books and numerous articles on blindness, deafness, social issues and women's rights. Many books and plays were written about her life.

Despite the broad range of her interests, Helen Keller never lost sight of the needs of others who were blind and deaf-blind. Soon after the American Foundation for the Blind was established in 1921 she became a member of the Foundation staff, where she worked until her death in 1968 as counselor on national relations. In 1932 she also became a vice-president of the Royal National Institute for the Blind in the United Kingdom. In 1946 she was appointed counselor on international relations for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind (renamed Helen Keller International), visiting 35 countries during seven trips between 1946 and 1957.

First day cover commemorating the Helen Keller Centennial 1880-1980 postmarked June 27, 1980

Helen Keller received honorary doctoral degrees from Temple University, Harvard, Universities of Glasgow, Berlin, Delhi and Johannesburg. An entire room at AFB is devoted to a collection of her personal papers and memorabilia, including Brazil's Order of the Southern Cross, Japan's Sacred Treasure, the Lions Humanitarian Award for lifetime service and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. In 1965 she was one of the 20 elected to the Women's Hall of Fame at the New York World's Fair.

More rewarding to Helen Keller than the many honors she received, were the acquaintances and friendships she made with most of the leading personalities of her time. There were few world figures, from Grover Cleveland to Charlie Chaplin, to Nehru to John F. Kennedy, that she did not meet. She was truly a remarkable world ambassador and a distinguished leader advocating for better services for blind and deaf-blind wherever she went.

Giggling Elmo Hot Tomato Game

Posted: 05 Nov 2009 06:29 AM PST

It's the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. In this game, Elmo appears as a plush tomato that begins giggling when the child pushes its nose. Children from 3 years and up will also giggle as they pass the tomato back and forth as quickly as possible so they are not the one holding Elmo when he stops giggling. To add to the fun, 20 cards are included with letters, colors or categories on them to guide the players to calling out an item associated with the card and then passing Elmo on quickly so as not to be caught with him when he stops giggling. Elmo measures about 5 x 5" x 3.5" and uses 2 "AA" batteries that are included.

Here is a good story of a judge that should be removed from the bench.
Some of the issues mentioned are things we are currently discussing.

Enjoy.

Some Charges Dropped Against Ex-Alabama Judge

*Wednesday, October 21, 2009*

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -

Kidnapping and extortion charges against a former Alabama judge were
dismissed Wednesday, but a jury will deliberate the remaining felony
counts accusing him of paddling and sexually abusing male inmates in
return for leniency.

Circuit Judge Claud Neilson said jurors would hear closing arguments in
the pared-down case against former Mobile Circuit Judge Herman Thomas on
Thursday morning and begin deliberating later in the day.

Thomas, 48, was a community leader in Mobile, serving as a judge for 17
years, a trustee of two universities and an organizer of mentoring
programs for youth. He resigned in 2007 when allegations surfaced that
he spanked defendants with a wooden paddle. Then earlier this year a
grand jury indicted him on charges that he physically and sexually
abusing young male defendants in return for help with their cases.

He originally faced 103 charges involving 15 young men, but prosecutors
dropped four of the men's cases during the trial, and the judge threw
out all ethics charges against him because the statute of limitations
expired.

On Wednesday, the judge dismissed kidnapping charges, saying accusations
that Thomas took young men to a private courthouse office for paddlings
didn't constitute kidnapping.

"I don't think kidnapping occurred in the Mobile County courthouse in a
room that is unlocked," he said.

Neilson also threw out the extortion charges accusing Thomas of securing
sexual favors from inmates in return for leniency. He said Alabama's law
involves taking things of value permanently or for a long period, and
taking sexual favors doesn't fit the definition of the law.

"How do you deprive someone permanently of sexual favors?" he asked
prosecutors.

Defense attorney Jeff Deen said he was pleased that four-fifths of the
original charges had been dismissed or thrown out, and only 21 charges
remained.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson said the jury would
still consider very serious charges of assault, sexual abuse, attempted
sodomy and sodomy. The last charge is the most serious and carries a
sentence of 10 years to life in prison.

Thomas did not testify in his own defense during the trial. Defense
attorney Robert "Cowboy Bob" Clark said there was no need because of the
lack of credibility of Thomas' 11 accusers.

"They were a bunch of felonious liars," Clark said.

Instead of Thomas defending himself, the defense team spent two days
presenting a Roman Catholic archbishop, two school principals, a
kindergarten teacher and a coach who described how Thomas spent many
hours speaking to school groups and mentoring young people, particularly
those in trouble.

"What else do you want? You want the pope?" Clark told reporters outside
the courtroom.

How Big is My World?
<http://feedproxy.google.com/%7Er/FredsHeadCompanion/%7E3/x2ylGJYAnYI/how-big-is-my-world.html>

by Donna J. Jodhan

In the normal scheme of things, my world should be as big as I want it
to be but in today's society it is very difficult for me to define the
size of my world. You see, my world is not really in my hands. For the
most part and sadly so, my world remains in the hands of society and I
can tell you that there are days where I wish I could change this; but I
can't. Sad but true.

One of my favorite quotations is by Robert F. Kennedy: "Some men see
things as they are and say why! I dream things that never were and say
why not!" And this is the philosophy that I use every day of my life in
order to define my world in my own way.

You may be wondering why I would say that my world is not in my hands
but rather in the hands of society and I'll tell you why.

Society has inadvertently and continues to erect countless barriers for
me and for others who are blind and visually impaired. They have erected
daunting barriers for millions of persons with disabilities and have
even gone the extra mile to do the same for seniors. In the case of
persons with disabilities, and in particular persons who are blind and
visually impaired, one of the most challenging barriers that I and my
cofrères face is a barrier called Attitude.

This barrier is nothing new and has been around for too long and if I
and my cofrères do not take steps to bring it down, then I am afraid
that we will find ourselves inadvertently short changing tomorrow's
generation of disabled kids of a better future. In short, if we do not
start to pro-act in stead of react, we will be robbing our disabled kids
of their rights to a future that ought to include them as contributing
members to society.

All my life I have had to battle attitude barriers from society. As
early as I can remember: My parents had to battle the system to allow me
to obtain my formal education. Then as a university student I had to
endure constant remarks from those professors who made no effort to hide
their discontent about having a blind student in their class. In the
workplace I and others have had to deal with the narrow mindedness of
managers and co-workers alike who do not believe that blind and visually
impaired persons can be productive and this is why I am so glad that I
can now use the Internet as my workplace. Most of my clients are
blissfully unaware that I am blind and frankly, they would probably not
care as long as I was able to perform to their satisfaction.

I am not content to sit back and wait for things to happen and this is
why I have managed to expand my world much more than many others like
me. I challenged an ice skating school to teach me to ice skate. I have
learned to play chess. I have written two books. I have hang glided,
sailed, and even driven around in a parking lot. No, I am not showing
off! Just trying to motivate others to expand their world. Nothing is
impossible if you put your mind to it but to be possible one has to be
realistic.

The attitude barrier needs to be addressed and if I want to be
charitable which I am, I can say that 99.9% of the time, this barrier is
erected by those who are limited by such things as: Cultural beliefs,
fear of the unknown, fear of interacting with those who are different,
and an unwillingness to learn new things and meet new people. I am going
to give you three websites that you can visit in order to learn more
about the world of blind and visually impaired persons.

al-Marsad al-Iraqi website - Secret U.S. intelligence detention, in south of
Baghdad

Former detainees released by the U.S. forces revealed that they spent about
a month in a secret detention facility south of Baghdad run by U.S.
intelligence. Their stories matched other detainees' held in another prison
in Balad, north of Baghdad, during the same period, last year.

A former detainee, who preferred to be identified as Abu Manal, who is a
Shiite from southern Baghdad, revealed the process of being transferred to
the above mentioned prison after U.S. forces captured him in a raid
operation on his home village last year on charges of belonging to Jaish
al-Mahdi (JAM).

He said: "In the beginning, us four were blindfolded and handcuffed; we were
transferred to a camp in al-A'dwaniya area, or Arab Jabour, inside a luxury
house that belonged to one of Saddam's men before he fled to Syria.

"The four of us plus others that were there, were crammed inside the pool of
the house before we were taken in armored vehicles to a nearby camp, where
we stayed for hours before we were all spread over Humvees.

"We were then taken on a route through my village, as I was able to
recognize it because of the guard in charge of watching me got busy flirting
with his colleague in the car, I realized we were heading towards Babil
province, south of Baghdad.

"I spent two weeks in a U.S. forces camp, which was formerly used for
transmitting an Iraqi television channel, before April 2003, in an area
called al-Mashroua'a or Mashroua'a al-Musayab, 40 kilometers south of
Baghdad.

"I along with my friends were subjected to harsh rounds of interrogations,
with the use of various kinds of psychological and physical tortures. We
were thrown in low temperature cells in a severe situation, semi-naked,
except for undershorts, with cameras set up in one corner of the cell to
monitor our actions.

"Throughout this time, we were prevented from sleeping while lying down,
rather we were forced to sit cross-legged, and in any other position, we
would be subjected to severe punishments, including simulated drowning in
semi-frozen waters or severe beatings."

Abu Manal described the detention center as: "A closed hall divided into
three parts, of which the center part was the prison administration and
bathrooms, and along its two sides were sets of cells, each of which
consists of five partitions each one with five steel cells, which means 25
cells on each side, or 50 cells in each hall, where one inmate was to each
cell.

"The cells were like a metal box less than 2-meters in length, width and
height, with one installed bed that rises about ½ a meter from the ground.

"The cells did not include any furniture and the inmate served his time
without a mattress or blanket and under 0-Celsius temperature."

Abu Manal revealed the way he knew these details, was during interrogation
by an intelligence officer, as he (detainee) mastered the English language,
he stated: "A relationship with some kind of flexibility in dealing with me
as a prisoner was formed, he tried to win my heart through some of the
facilities provided for me, such as increasing the number of bathroom visits
and not to be bothered by the guards; I exploited these facilitations as I
started out of curiosity to get around inside the place, and just look
around."

Ahmad al-Shimmery, 27 years-old, who was detained at a location in Balad,
north of Baghdad revealed to al-Hayat newspaper other types of torture he
and other detainees suffered, he said, "I was exposed to severe
psychological torture, where prisoners were put in a helicopter, blindfolded
and with tied hands and after their flight takes off, the door would open
and the translator would tell the detainee to watch himself die, and then
throw him to the ground for a surprise that he would fall on a large piece
of sponge and then the investigator would say, next time the sponge will not
be there."

Other forms of tortures told by al-Shimmery was that U.S. intelligence were
using dogs trained on boxing to torture the detainee, and noted that: "The
second method of torture used on me during the investigation was being
tortured by a dog trained to box, where the detainee is placed in a small
cell to fit one person only with a large size dog, who would burly and
forcefully punch the detainee with both hands, and if you try to resist the
prisoner would be bitten by the dog until he bleeds and then would go back
to a normal sitting position in his blood. This form of torture would
continue until the dog feels that his victim had surrendered, and then the
dog would go back to the door.

"The third way of torture was to strip the detainees naked and place them in
a steel chamber with freezing temperature, through the translator he would
be told that he will be thrown in the river, blindfolded and with hands
tied behind his back, and actually the detainee would be thrown into a deep
basin for a short period then he would be lifted and sent for
interrogations."

He reported on the use of unethical methods of tortures with women in the
prison, he said: "The female prisoners that were considered not cooperative,
they would be detained in quarries alone for several days without food or
water and then one of the prisoners would be forced to take food for them
while completely naked and the female detainee will be compelled to look at
the man's body, otherwise she will be exposed to tougher means of torture."

Al-Hayat newspaper, made an attempt to contact a senior official in the U.S.
military Corps in Iraq, who asked for anonymity, he was asked to respond to
the reality of the secret prisons in Balad and Mashroua'a al-Musayab, he
said: "This is a complex and political interrelated issue, we will not
comment on it now."

Would You Permit Me?

نزار قباني
Nizar Kabbani

In a country where thinkers are assassinated, and writers are considered
infidels and books are burnt, in societies that refuse the other, and
force silence on mouths and thoughts forbidden, and to question is a
sin, I must beg your pardon, would you permit me?
فهل تسمحون لي
ان اربي اطفالي كما اريد، وألا تملوا علي
اهواءكم واوامركم؟
Would you permit me to bring up my children as I want, and not to
dictate on me your whims and orders?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اعلم اطفالي ان الدين لله اولا، وليس
للمشايخ والفقهاء والناس؟
Would you permit me to teach my children that the religion is first to
God, and not for religious leaders or scholars or people?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اعلم صغيرتي ان الدين هو اخلاق وأدب وتهذيب
وامانة وصدق، قبل ان اعلمها بأي قدم تدخل الحمام وبأي يد

تأكل

Would you permit me to teach my little one that religion is about good
manners, good behaviour, good conduct, honesty and truthfulness, before
I teach her with which foot to enter the bathroom or with which hand she
should eat?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اعلم ابنتي ان الله محبة، وانها تستطيع ان
تحاوره وتسأله ما تشاء، بعيدا عن تعاليم أي أحد؟
Would you permit me to teach my daughter that God is about love, and she
can dialogue with Him and ask Him anything she wants, far away from the
teachings of anyone?
·
هل تسمحون لي الا اذكر عذاب القبر لاولادي،
الذين لم يعرفوا ما هو الموت بعد؟
Would you permit me not to mention the torture of the grave to my
children, who do not know about death yet?
< STRONG> ·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اعلم ابنتي اصول الدين وادبه واخلاقه، قبل
ان افرض عليها الحجاب؟
Would you permit me to teach my daughter the tenets of the religion and
its culture and manners, before I force on her the 'Hijab' (the veil)?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اقول لابني الشاب ان ايذاء الناس وتحقيرهم
لجنسيتهم ولونهم ودينهم، هو ذنب كبير عند الله؟
Would you permit me to tell my young son that hurting people and
degrading them because of their nationality, colour or religion, is
considered a big sin by God?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اقول لابنتي ان مراجعة دروسها والاهتمام بتعليمها
انفع واهم عند الله من حفظ آيات القرآن عن ظهر قلب دون تدبر معانيها؟
Would you permit me to tell my daughter to revising her homework and
paying attention to her learning is considered by God as more useful and
important than learning by heart Ayahs from the Quran without knowing
their meaning?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اعلم ابني ان الاقتداء بالرسول الكريم يبدأ
بنزاهته وامانته وصدقه، قبل لحيته وقصر ثوبه؟
Would you permit me to teach my son that following the footsteps of the
Honourable Prophet begins with his honesty, loyalty and truthfulness,
before his beard or how short his thobe (long shirt/dress) is?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اقول ل7بنتي ان صديقتها المسيحية ليست
كافرة، والا تبكي خوفا عليها من دخول النار؟
Would you permit me to tell my daughter that her Christian friend is not
an infidel, and ask her not to cry fearing her friend will go to Hell?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اجاهر، ان الله لم يوكل احدا في الارض بعد الرسول لان يتحدث باسمه
ولم يخول احدا بمنح 'صكوك الغفران' للناس؟
Would you permit me to argue, that God did not authorize anyone on earth
after the Prophet to speak in his name nor did he vest any powers in
anyone to issue 'deeds of forgiveness' to people?
·
هل تسمحون لي
ان اقول، ان الله حرم قتل النفس البشرية، وان
من قتل نفسا بغير حق كأنما قتل الناس جميعا، وانه لا يحق لمسلم ان يروع
مسلما؟
Would you permit me to say, that God has forbidden killing the human
spirit, and who kills wrongly a human being is as if he killed all human
kind, and no Moslem has the right to frighten another Moslem?
·
Would you permit me to teach my children that God is greater, more just,
and more merciful than all the (religious) scholars on earth combined?
And that his standards are different from the standards of those trading
the religion, and that his accountability is kinder and more merciful?

هل تسمحون لي
Would you permit me?

A lot of us can identify with this.

* "I'm Tired" by Robert A. Hall

I'll be 63 soon. Except for one semester in college when
jobs were scarce, and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but
job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some
health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick
in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job
or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no
retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.

I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth
around" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the
government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it
to people too lazy or stupid to earn it.

I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to
"keep people in their homes." Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I'm
willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of
our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the
leftwing Congress critters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community
Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them-with their own money.

I'm tired of being told how bad America is by leftwing
millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood entertainers who
live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years,
if they get their way, the United States will have the religious freedom and
women's rights of Saudi Arabia, the economy of Zimbabwe, the freedom of the
press of China, the crime and violence of Mexico, the tolerance for Gay
people of Iran, and the freedom of speech of Venezuela. Won't
multiculturalism be beautiful?

I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace,"
when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their
sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor;" of Muslims rioting
over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because
they aren't "believers;" of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims
stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery;" of Muslims mutilating
the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur`an
and Shari`a law tells them to.

I believe a man should be judged by the content of his
character, not by the color of his skin. I'm tired of being told that "race
doesn't matter" in the post-racial world of President Obama, when it's all
that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and
graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government
contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and
fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the
appointment of US Senators from Illinois. I think it's very cool that we
have a black president and that a black child is doing her homework at the
desk where Lincoln wrote the emancipation proclamation. I just wish the
black president was Condi Rice, or someone who believes more in freedom and
the individual and less in an all-knowing government.

I'm tired of a news media that thinks Bush's fundraising and
inaugural expenses were obscene, but that think Obama's, at triple the cost,
were wonderful. That thinks Bush exercising daily was a waste of
presidential time, but Obama exercising is a great example for the public to
control weight and stress. That picked over every line of Bush's military
records, but never demanded that Kerry release his, that slammed Palin with
two years as governor for being too inexperienced for VP, but touted Obama
with three years as senator as potentially the best president ever.

Wonder why people are dropping their subscriptions or
switching to Fox News? Get a clue. I didn't vote for Bush in 2000, but the
media and Kerry drove me to his camp in 2004.

I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other
cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and
madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America , while no American group
is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia
to teach love and tolerance.

I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to
fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live
in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We
also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live.
Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore's, and if you're 95% greener
than Gore, you're green enough.

I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease,
and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did
a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up
their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don't think Gay people
choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And
I'm tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I
tell them I never tried marijuana.

I'm tired of illegal aliens being called "undocumented
workers," especially the ones who aren't working, but are living on welfare
or crime. What's next? Calling drug dealers, "Undocumented Pharmacists"?
And, no, I'm not against Hispanics. Most of them are Catholic and it's been
a few hundred years since Catholics wanted to kill me for my religion. I'm
willing to fast track for citizenship any Hispanic person who can speak
English, doesn't have a criminal record, and who is self-supporting without
family on welfare, or who serves honorably for three years in our military.
Those are the citizens we need.

I'm tired of latte liberals and journalists, who would never
wear the uniform of the Republic themselves, or let their
entitlement-handicapped kids near a recruiting station, trashing our
military. They and their kids can sit at home, never having to make
split-second d ecisions under life and death circumstances, and bad mouth
better people then themselves. Do bad things happen in war? You bet. Do our
troops sometimes misbehave? Sure. Does this compare with the atrocities that
were the policy of our enemies for the last fifty years-and still are? Not
even close.

So here's the deal. I'll let myself be subjected to all the
humiliation and abuse that was heaped on terrorists at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo,
and the critics can let themselves be subject to captivity by the Muslims
who tortured and beheaded Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, or the Muslims who
tortured and murdered Marine Lt. Col. William Higgins in Lebanon, or the
Muslims who ran the blood-spattered Al Qaeda torture rooms our troops found
in Iraq, or the Muslims who cut off the heads of schoolgirls in Indonesia,
because the girls were Christian. Then we'll compare notes. British and
American soldiers are the only troops in history that civilians came to for
help and handouts, instead of hiding from in fear.

I'm tired of people telling me that their party has a corner
on virtue and the other party has a corner on corruption. Read the
papers-bums are bi-partisan. And I'm tired of people telling me we need
bi-partisanship. I live in Illinois, where the " Illinois Combine" of
Democrats and Republicans has worked together harmoniously to

loot the public for 20 years. And I notice that the tax
cheats in Obama's cabinet are bi-partisan as well.

I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and
politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes
or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was
getting caught.

I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or
poor.

Speaking of poor, I'm tired of hearing people with
air-conditioned homes, color TVs, and two cars called poor. The majority of
Americans didn't have that in 1970, but we didn't know we were "poor." The
poverty pimps have to keep changing the definition of poor to keep the
dollars flowing.

I'm real tired of people who don't take responsibility for
their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or
discrimination, or big-whatever for their problems.

Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 63. Because,
mostly, I'm not going to get to see the world these people are making. I'm
just sorry for my granddaughter.

Robert A. Hall is a Marine Vietnam veteran who served five
terms in the Massachusetts state senate.

The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare
Eight things we can do to improve health care without adding to the deficit.

By JOHN MACKEY

"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out
of other people's money."

—Margaret Thatcher

With a projected $1.8 trillion deficit for 2009, several trillions more
in deficits projected over the next decade, and with both Medicare and
Social Security entitlement spending about to ratchet up several notches
over the next 15 years as Baby Boomers become eligible for both, we are
rapidly running out of other people's money. These deficits are simply
not sustainable. They are either going to result in unprecedented new
taxes and inflation, or they will bankrupt us.

While we clearly need health-care reform, the last thing our country
needs is a massive new health-care entitlement that will create hundreds
of billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us much closer
to a government takeover of our health-care system. Instead, we should
be trying to achieve reforms by moving in the opposite direction—toward
less government control and more individual empowerment. Here are eight
reforms that would greatly lower the cost of health care for everyone:

• Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible
health insurance plans and health savings accounts (HSAs). The
combination of high-deductible health insurance and HSAs is one solution
that could solve many of our health-care problems. For example, Whole
Foods Market pays 100% of the premiums for all our team members who work
30 hours or more per week (about 89% of all team members) for our
high-deductible health-insurance plan. We also provide up to $1,800 per
year in additional health-care dollars through deposits into employees'
Personal Wellness Accounts to spend as they choose on their own health
and wellness.

Money not spent in one year rolls over to the next and grows over time.
Our team members therefore spend their own health-care dollars until the
annual deductible is covered (about $2,500) and the insurance plan kicks
in. This creates incentives to spend the first $2,500 more carefully.
Our plan's costs are much lower than typical health insurance, while
providing a very high degree of worker satisfaction.

• Equalize the tax laws so that employer-provided health insurance and
individually owned health insurance have the same tax benefits. Now
employer health insurance benefits are fully tax deductible, but
individual health insurance is not. This is unfair.

• Repeal all state laws which prevent insurance companies from competing
across state lines. We should all have the legal right to purchase
health insurance from any insurance company in any state and we should
be able use that insurance wherever we live. Health insurance should be
portable.

• Repeal government mandates regarding what insurance companies must
cover. These mandates have increased the cost of health insurance by
billions of dollars. What is insured and what is not insured should be
determined by individual customer preferences and not through
special-interest lobbying.

• Enact tort reform to end the ruinous lawsuits that force doctors to
pay insurance costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. These
costs are passed back to us through much higher prices for health care.

• Make costs transparent so that consumers understand what health-care
treatments cost. How many people know the total cost of their last
doctor's visit and how that total breaks down? What other goods or
services do we buy without knowing how much they will cost us?

• Enact Medicare reform. We need to face up to the actuarial fact that
Medicare is heading towards bankruptcy and enact reforms that create
greater patient empowerment, choice and responsibility.

• Finally, revise tax forms to make it easier for individuals to make a
voluntary, tax-deductible donation to help the millions of people who
have no insurance and aren't covered by Medicare, Medicaid or the State
Children's Health Insurance Program.

Many promoters of health-care reform believe that people have an
intrinsic ethical right to health care—to equal access to doctors,
medicines and hospitals. While all of us empathize with those who are
sick, how can we say that all people have more of an intrinsic right to
health care than they have to food or shelter?

Health care is a service that we all need, but just like food and
shelter it is best provided through voluntary and mutually beneficial
market exchanges. A careful reading of both the Declaration of
Independence and the Constitution will not reveal any intrinsic right to
health care, food or shelter. That's because there isn't any. This
"right" has never existed in America

Even in countries like Canada and the U.K., there is no intrinsic right
to health care. Rather, citizens in these countries are told by
government bureaucrats what health-care treatments they are eligible to
receive and when they can receive them. All countries with socialized
medicine ration health care by forcing their citizens to wait in lines
to receive scarce treatments.

Although Canada has a population smaller than California, 830,000
Canadians are currently waiting to be admitted to a hospital or to get
treatment, according to a report last month in Investor's Business
Daily. In England, the waiting list is 1.8 million.

At Whole Foods we allow our team members to vote on what benefits they
most want the company to fund. Our Canadian and British employees
express their benefit preferences very clearly—they want supplemental
health-care dollars that they can control and spend themselves without
permission from their governments. Why would they want such additional
health-care benefit dollars if they already have an "intrinsic right to
health care"? The answer is clear—no such right truly exists in either
Canada or the U.K.—or in any other country.

Rather than increase government spending and control, we need to address
the root causes of poor health. This begins with the realization that
every American adult is responsible for his or her own health.

Unfortunately many of our health-care problems are self-inflicted:
two-thirds of Americans are now overweight and one-third are obese. Most
of the diseases that kill us and account for about 70% of all
health-care spending—heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and
obesity—are mostly preventable through proper diet, exercise, not
smoking, minimal alcohol consumption and other healthy lifestyle choices.

Recent scientific and medical evidence shows that a diet consisting of
foods that are plant-based, nutrient dense and low-fat will help prevent
and often reverse most degenerative diseases that kill us and are
expensive to treat. We should be able to live largely disease-free lives
until we are well into our 90s and even past 100 years of age.

Health-care reform is very important. Whatever reforms are enacted it is
essential that they be financially responsible, and that we have the
freedom to choose doctors and the health-care services that best suit
our own unique set of lifestyle choices. We are all responsible for our
own lives and our own health. We should take that responsibility very
seriously and use our freedom to make wise lifestyle choices that will
protect our health. Doing so will enrich our lives and will help create
a vibrant and sustainable American society.

Mr. Mackey is co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market Inc.
